Sock gusset calculations

Anyone who has used my sock patterns will know that I think it’s important to make sure your socks fit properly, and the only real way to do that is to use a little bit of maths. I’ve always tried to make it as easy as possible, but I know that some people have still struggled – I get it, some people just have a blind spot about numbers.

A kind friend, who has insisted I don’t name her, gave me a spreadsheet she’d created for herself that helped decide where to start the gussets, which is really the hardest part. With her blessing, I have tweaked it a little and now it is available for you to use.

  1. By length of foot, do you mean my foot or length that I want the finished foot of the sock to be (ie. negative ease required for a sock)?

  2. Thanks for the clarification about foot length. Another question about number of rows to knit before starting gusset. Does that mean total rows knitted from beginning of toe or number of rows after stopping toe increases (ie. when I reach the 60 stitches needed for my sock pattern)?

    • No problem. It means from the toe. That way it allows for people who like to make the toes a little bit longer, which is something I sometimes like to do if I’m doing a contrast toe.
