I’m Jo Torr, knitwear designer and technical editor, but you know that anyway – I thought you might like a picture because it always helps to be able to visualise who you’re talking to.
The first jumper I knitted for myself was when I was about 15. It was a wonder of geometric design (it was the ’80s) and intarsia and I wore it for many years until it finally got too tatty. The pattern was one that I stole from the copy of Vogue in the school library; it was entirely in French and I had to spend many lunchtimes with an enormous dictionary before I could even begin. Nothing in knitting phased me after that.
If I had to give myself a label, I’d say I’m a mathematician rather than an artist; you might be able to see that in my designs. I love the interaction of shapes and will spend a lot of time perfecting details, but the underlying principle is always a good fit, that’s the most important thing.
When I’m checking other people’s patterns I apply that same level of precision so you should always be able to feel safe in my hands, whether you’re knitting from one of my patterns or entrusting me with one of yours.
